Soapmaking has become a daily chore here on the farm! The goat(s) are milked every morning and the soaping starts from there.
The soap is made using the old-fashioned, cold process method because that's what real farm women used to do!! This is the process of mixing a lye solution (in our case lye and goat's milk) with fats/oils that are each chosen specifically for their unique contribution to forming a 'perfect' soap! The base of our 'perfect' recipe includes coconut, palm, sunflower, soyabean, castor and shea butter.
A tidbit: Handmade soap contains natural glycerin created by the soapmaking process. Glycerin attracts moisture to the skin. It is retained in the final product (unlike commercial soaps where it is removed) leaving the soap moisturizing and nourishing with silky lather.
Every batch of soap is focused on the use of natural ingredients/additives and pure essential oil blends. In our opinion, lavender oil belongs in every batch and is subtly present in each bar of soap (unless it is an unscented bar). Lavender has the ability to blend well with all other essential oils, making for unique scents with wonderful aromatherapy properties. Other essential oils include Lime, Cinnamon Bark, Anise Star, Lemon, Vanilla, Sweet Orange, Pink Grapefruit, Pine Scotch, Peppermint, Wintergreen and Clove.
You'll find soaps that have everything from oatmeal for it's soothing abilites, coffee grinds and tea leaves for exfoliating, cocoa powder for color and antioxidants, pureed pumpkin for richness and color, cornmeal, ground star anise and honey, to of course lavender buds from our own crop!
Batches of soap are mixed, molded and left overnight to saponify, meaning the ingredients are becoming one with each other and forming a soap. At the end of this process the lye is non-existent and with 4-6 weeks cure time, a gentle, creamy soap is what is left!
Each bar is handcut and set aside for that cure time. We do nothing else to it but add a label!
Simply put, this soap is made with what I like to call 'rustic charm'. This means with little fussing, focusing on the goodness that has been created....perfectly imperfect! This also means less pain for this country wife who suffers from a bit of pathological perfectionism and needs this philosophy to make soap, otherwise it would never be ready to sell here on this website (or anywhere)!
